Nether Stowey had several famous residents including Robert Parsons, a Jesuit priest, reputed to be behind the Guy Fawkes plot to blow up Parliament and Samuel Grose, who was one of a number of people who improved the efficiency of the steam-pumping engine. Steam engines were in use a hundred years before Grose was born but didn't work particularly well until first Watt and then Trevithick set their minds to the problem.
Kilve - Sarah Biffen, born in 1784 without arms or legs. She never exceeded 37" in length yet showed a great talent for painting, holding the brush between her teeth. She was awarded a medal by the Society of Art and counted royalty among her patrons.
The familt home of Terrence Rattigan, playwright, is at Combe Florey
Sampford Brett - the old manorial hall is now a private residence, but it was once in the ownership of one of the four knights that murdered Thomas a Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury.
Nick Partridge OBE, was born and raised in the Minehead. He was the Chief Executive of The Terrence Higgins Trust, and a key campaigner on HIV and AIDS.
