Lundy Field Society

Add your information to this page

LUNDY FIELD SOCIETY was originated for the study and conservation of a unique island.

Lundy Island has been a focus of scientific enquiry for many years and much of this has been carried out by the Lundy Field Society. The Society is a charity that has as its aims the study of Lundy, in particular its history, natural history and archaeology, and the conservation of its wildlife and antiquities.
Founded in 1946, the Lundy Field Society had its headquarters for many years at the Old Light.

The Lundy Field Society (LFS) was founded in 1946 to further the study and conservation of Lundy's natural history and archaeology. Initially a bird observatory was established and various field courses were organised, since when the range of fields of study has expanded constantly.

Members of the LFS Initiated archaeological surveys and excavations, and published the first archaeological guide in 1971. Studies carried out by the Society were instrumental in the designation of Lundy as an SSSI and In the establishment of the Marine Nature Reserve. We encourage study Into a\\ aspects of Lundy, offer modest grants to support Independent research, and organise working parties to assist the harden with island tasks.

A log-book is maintained In the Tavern in which all visitors and Islanders are Invited to enter records. Bird-ringing is carried out seasonally by members who are qualified experts. The Society publishes an Annual Report and an annual Newsletter, as well as other books and leaflets.

To be a member it is not necessary to be an expert in any of the activities undertaken by the Society. Whether you have just discovered Lundy, or have known it for years, you will be welcomed as a member, and you will be making an Important contribution to the study and conservation of the Island through your membership. If you have an interest in the Island, membership will help you to extend your knowledge and enjoyment of this special place. The Society is managed by an elected committee - they and the members are ready to share their knowledge and expertise with others.

Members of the Lundy Field Society receive:

  • the annual Newsletter with articles on a variety of Lundy topics and updates on Island and LFS news.

  • the Annual Report which details the work carried out on the island and other research findings.

  • an Invitation to the Annual Meeting, held in Exeter each March. This resembles a Lundy Club with minimum formalities, where members enjoy talks by experts, renew acquaintances, often pin In an auction of Lundy items, and enjoy a drink together afterwards.

  • the chance to join the working parties at low cost.

  • the use of the Society's library on the island.

LUNDY is unique in many ways. It is home to an unusual range of plants, birds and wildlife and, because it has suffered little disturbance, it offers special opportunities for study and research The island also has an interesting history, with Bronze Age settlements, a medieval castle and the remains of Victorian granite quarries. Feral deer, Soay sheep and goats roam the island, as well as the Lundy ponies.
There are 41 scheduled sites and monuments and 14 listed buildings. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and the surrounding seas are the U.K.'s first statutory Marine Nature Reserve (1956). Part of the Reserve is also the first No-Take Zone (2003) where removal of marine life is banned; this is already showing positive results.
