The character of the north Devon coast around Morte Point is due to the nature of the rocks, the Morte slates giving way to llfracombe slates somewhere east of Lee Bay. This crumbly rock does not make for high, dramatic cliffs, but instead gives a jagged and somewhat menacing appearance, borne out by the number of ships which have been wrecked along its reefs over the centuries. There are many small coves and some of the names - Brandy Cove, Breakneck Point, Damage cliffs - are evocative of a legendary smuggling or wrecking past.
The treacherous cliffs that form part of the
coastline were once a favourite haunt of smugglers looking for a landing
for their contraband goods.
